    Mad Max: Fury Road

Arthouse action turned up to 11. It's insane and it knows it. The attention to detail (gargantuan man-driven pulleys, "blood bags", characters' ailments, Furiosa's arm, the plethora of vehicles and occupants... etc) elevates the series' previous world-building by a country mile. Hardy is great but Theron OWNS IT.

    It's Mad Max 2 Squared.

Felt like a lemon driving home in my little Hyundai.

Further update... after a third watch, here's a little something I wrote about teeth: stevangelical.wordpress.com/2015/06/21/of-mad-max-and-molars/

“Scram the son of a bitch.”

A tense thriller that could have just been lots of talking and shots of dials, yet features action—car chases, gunfight—and some dialogue that takes this beyond the mundane.

The cast are great, especially the top trio, but also Wilford Brimley too as a quiet man who’s watching and thinking and working through his cowardice to speak up.

And the finale is top notch. Emotional, traumatic, poignant, timeless.

Not quite what I expected, nevertheless a varyingly enjoyable anthology of creepy tales. The second (featuring a brilliant King himself) and the last segments are the strongest, and the bookend tale is quite fun too.

Would make for a good reboot to complement the V/H/S series these days...?

    The Electric State

Extremely forgettable, even while you're watching it, while not without some fun ideas (a bot-within-bots), impressive FX work, and one funny joke (I counted: one). Tucci's villain is one-dimensional, the leads aren't likeable enough (they're both capable of SO much more), a paper-thin story comprised of tropes we've seen before and confounding character motivations (for all my criticism of THE CREATOR's script, that one did all this so much better; make of that what you will), and the final moments…

    Nosferatu

    ★★★½

It’s well made and engaging, and Skarsgård‘s Orlok is remarkable in both design and performance. Unfortunately it’s all a little too over-earnest – a number of the performances are turned up to 11 and would have been better, Skarsgård aside, if they were delivered at a 9.

That final scene, and final shot, are perfect though.

Not entirely sure what this adds to the world when we already have the ‘22 and ‘79 versions, and narratively I still prefer the OG (book and Coppola).

I’ll always love to see an Eggers film, but personally so far it’s: The Northman > The Witch > The Lighthouse > Nosferatu.
