Start with mixture of John Wick fight sequences and James Bond chases. Stir some wonderfully silly dialog, a stunning femme fatale, and an impossibly-evil baddie (whose name is simply, and amusingly, “Jim”).  Then, for the pièce de résistance, add a sprinkling of Bollywood-style sexy dance sequences, and you have made that marvelous guilty pleasure of an action movie that we’ve all been craving. See it on the big screen: the locations and crazy stunts deserve it!

    Why only four stars?…

A Mad Libs- generated hodgepodge of action movie tropes, complete with cartoonishly-violent gangs, absurd dialog, unrelatable characters, and no small amount of jingoism.  In the big shoot’em up scenes, the bad guys (who, despite blasting away with enough automatic weaponry to take down Sauron’s army, are such miserable shots they make the Vogons look like sharpshooters) are so ineffectual, the pilot has time to carefully run through his pre-flight inspection while the bullets are sailing by.
I do give it a star because I walked in expecting nothing, and my expectations were met precisely.

Let’s face it: if you watch the first five minutes off the film, if you’ve even seen the trailer, heck, if you’ve only seen the poster, you already know where this movie goes. The only question is the path it’ll take to get there.  And that path provides few surprises.  Tom Hanks is always solid, and Mariana Treviño’s Marisol was a treat, and those kids?  Those kids could melt the heart of a frost demon.  Go if you’d like a charmer, but don’t expect a masterpiece.
