I really wasn't expecting this movie. All the trailers really focus on what I'd say is the most uninteresting part of the film. Usually this kind of film is giddy to reveal its hand and no that wasn't the case. The film takes a brave chance to hard reset its cast while keeping its world. It rewards those who are fans of the past 3 films or the original concept, a rarity to service both.

It works as an origin story but there is so little tension or real drama when you know where a plot is going at every single turn. The slow build between James Franco, his father and Ceaser was easily the best part of the film. Then it falls into scenes that just feel very predictable.

Jim Carrey is pretty good and those 90s kids will enjoy that he tries to channel 1900-s Jim Carrey. But that's kinda the issue, he is channeling an actor he isn't anymore. Some scenes he nails it and others he doesn't. He honestly plays better off a CGI Sonic than he does the human cop.
