Fave Ryan Gosling movie by a mile. Who among us has not danced to This Must be the Place while on the verge of tears? Beautifully shot and acted and a good reminder that sometimes people will be kind even when you expect them to be cruel. This came out before cell phones though so I don’t fucking know

Riveting performances from Sebastian Stan & Jeremy Strong but overall a pretty toothless biopic. I do in theory like the idea of Cohn as a Frankenstein character both titillated and horrified by the monster he’s created, but I think a sharper turn towards surrealism would’ve been needed for it to work in practice. All the subtlety of a hammer but I like the way it hit. Gorgeous and gross in a way that inspired more compassion than cringe (for me at least.) To me, the themes about beauty standards and even the brutality of Hollywood/fame were secondary to the plurality of self thing…. Like whoa yeah you are, at all times, your younger self fearing your older self and your older self resenting your younger self. And it’s all you. And you have to find a way to live with yourself no matter which self the world is seeing. And also you’re a woman. Phew
