EVERY MASTERPIECE HAS ITS CHEAP COPY
This film reminded me of the "jaunlatvieši" movement that took place during the first Latvian national awakening. The dead poets in the film were similar to the Latvian students in that they both secretly met up, wrote poetry, and were all male. However, the major difference is that the dead poets did it for fun, while the "jaunlatvieši" sought to free Latvia from the Russian empire and preserve the Latvian language and folklore.
With regards to the similarities with Latvia's history, I loved this film. It was simple yet entertaining and soul-crushing.
