a fever dream. it really does feel like an assembly of half-formed thoughts and fragments collected over 50 years, stapled together and submitted as a finished script. weirdly earnest, but feels dated and incapable of reflecting the current political moment (or whatever he's trying to do here), in part to its commitment to the great-man and "grand civilization", which is maybe unsurprising given the whole "New Rome" framing (honestly he should have produced a new civilization game or something). here…
this sucked. on paper, interesting premise: the horror of france's atomic testing in french polynesia. but this is just a run-of-the-mill horror movie where the primary horror element is the colonizer's fear of the colonized's assumed savagery and barbarism.
