This was surprisingly good. I was not a fan of the original and came in with somewhat low expectations, but wow they won me over. If you’re going to make a horror movie about smiling, you gotta just amp up the absurdity and thank god they finally did that with this one. Much more style, interesting cinematography and a standout performance from Naomi Scott. Obviously still heavily reliant on jump scares, but there were some pretty fun/interesting ones as well as some genuinely tense scenes. Watch in theaters while you can. I can’t believe they made me write that much about Smile 2.
Having never read the source material and having just started the revered 1970s miniseries, I can even tell this thing is stripped of integral lore. Crazy to think that something shy of 2 hours long can be rushed, but alas. I liked the casting for Ben and Mr. Burke a good bit and it had a decent creepy atmosphere at times, but a lack of getting to really know the characters and some pretty stilted dialogue makes for a lackluster watch.
Have you seen Rosemary’s Baby? Then you’ve seen Apartment 7A but better. Nothing new to the overall lore, so what was the point? Not bad, just extremely by the numbers.
Joyfully fucked in the best possible way. Maybe a pinch too long for some folks’ taste, but overall one of the best body horror films I’ve watched in years.
