The editing and production design were the first things to pull me in, but threaded through the bizarre scenery was some powerful acting, particularly by Hopkins. This reminded me of La Cantatrice Chauve, a mind-bending piece of surreal theatre, so it didn’t surprise me to learn this film was based on a French play.
