Elton John: Never Too Late 2024
Semi-hagiographical; you could tell that someone who loves him made this film, which isn't entirely bad but know this is the lens through which you will watch. Really loved the segment on Elton and John Lennon. The entire film makes me want to go back and rewatch Rocketman, too.
Also... Benny and the Jets erasure!? This was the song I danced to as a kid in the living room while my parents' original Goodbye Yellow Brick Road LP spun... but I guess this is Elton's documentary and not mine.

American Symphony 2023
It's like 100 minutes of watching that friend who is a good singer and knows it and will randomly burst out into song when you're just hanging out; cringe-inducing.
And to quote Jon's wife at one point: "emotionally manipulative."
This documentary is manufactured and rarely looks outside the subject and the world around him - it's closed-off and inaccessible. I can take self-centred docs, but only up to a point.

The Color Purple 2023
A pretty pedestrian perspective, but still palatable. Potential for powerful points of profundity, but passes promptly past to encapsulate a pithy plot. Performances are prodigious and present, poignantly pulling passion and pride from the picture's pathos-impaired playscript. Patently prosaic.
