Frustrating because it comes so close to greatness yet falls so far short. Sadly the set-up is mediocre and the ending annoys me as much as it does everyone else. But damn if that middle act won't convince you that sadboi twink yearning is the ne plus ultra of cinematic endeavour I don't think anything will.

The Hidden Fortress 1958
Finally found a film with Toshiro Mifune in it where he isn't the most annoying character, but that's a small win. There are some great set-pieces like the prisoners' revolt and the spear duel, but following the two protagonists bumbling their way around grew pretty tiresome over the course of a couple of hours. Struggling to see quite why George Lucas looked at dear old Tahei and Matashichi and thought 'yes this but machines in space with wookiees and shit' but there we go. I wonder what Kurosawa would have made of The Rise of Skywalker.

As great as Gloria Swanson is (and she does deliver some iconic lines), whenever she's off-screen it's all rather dreary. Maybe the whole thing's just a bit too Gothic for me.
