  I was assigned to watch this movie in college and it nearly broke me.

  My instinct is to say that it is disrespectful to the viewer's time and their expectations, but that is by no means a criticism: the story it wants to tell is executed (to perfection) wholly independently of such considerations, and it proudly flaunts conventions of plot structure, pacing, and consistency of tone in pursuit of that goal.
