  if you can, watch the standard def widescreen dvd version of this one. looks so much better than it does on streaming—it’s far more realistic, scenes at night are actually dark, so on and so forth. just makes the viewing experience that much more impactful.

  approaches gangs in late 80s/early 90s L.A. in a far more nuanced way than a lot of other media did at the time, but still falls short in a lot of ways. it’s far too nice to the LAPD, for one. the LAPD was really a gang in and of itself—an idea that the movie attempts to address, but ends up fumbling with that tired narrative of “a few bad apples.” the societal issues that bring about gang violence are…
