This film is incredibly hormonal, with dizzying drops between sweetness and trauma. At first I felt a bit conned by the flick about the out, proud and popular trans teen turning into yet another queer trauma film, when Alice faces bullying from adults and peers after a move to the countryside. I’m still not sure whether it got the balance right between cute and mortifying; yet it is this dichotomy that accurately represents the life of a teenage girl.
