I thought Padre Amaro was going to challenge the morality of the Padre Benito. I was wrong. Either a product of his environment or an inherently immoral character, Padre Amaro refuses to recognize his own hypocrisy (sound familiar?). Not only does he turn a blind eye to the church’s involvement in money laundering narco money, he impregnates a 16 year old and obliges her to get an abortion.
The movie briefly mentioned liberation theory and I wish it delved into it more. I would’ve liked to see more regarding the campesinos and their fight for land/liberation. Shame they avoided this topic.
