    1. The shot when theres a shooting Tommy gun behind the pages of a calendar falling down to mark the passage of time is just *chef's kiss*

    2. The secretary character was just amazing comic relief and its a tragedy that De Palma didn't put him in his movie. What a legend.

That's about it. Just a really good 30s gangster movie.

Though this was my second time watching this movie, I comletely forgot most of it in the 15 years and honestly I was disappointed in how much I liked it earlier. I know it was basically the point but Pacino was so hard to watch the whole time, starting when he was trying to play a hot-shot cuban youngster as a 42 year old, and ending with his restaurant scene which i guess i blocked out of my mind.

They really had to make a whole horny-ass movie full of the most overt sexual tension that's ever been on film and some of the worst editing I've seen (the movie was 98% insufferable slow-mo and 2% weird attempts at Raging-Bull-but-make-it-tennis) just so Zendaya could say "I'm taking such good care of my little white boys?" I guess sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

P.S. The whole time I was watching this movie I was thinking "wow did they get Trent Reznor from Wish to write this score?" only to learn that it WAS Trent Reznor. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Honestly, I didn't think I would love a movie about a tortured director who lost his wife trying to achieve emotional catharsis by staging a Chekhov play as much as I did. Maybe thats the magic of the authenticity and obvious love for his charactes that Hamaguchi brings to his work.

Every once in a while, the movie would slip into the meta-artistic tropes that I hate so much (like the mute dancer who is soooo moved by Chekhov's words…
