Black Narcissus 1947
So stylized and weird and erotic and theatrical - and David Farrar as THE eye-candy in the whole movie is fascinating. There is something about this filmmaking that bypasses the rational brain and just hits primal, lizard brain responses. I don't know exactly why it is bewitching to me, but it certainly is. Probably because, like the nuns, I can't stop looking at Farrar's sweaty, bare chest and I miss it when it's offscreen.

Nosferatu 2024
I've really enjoyed Eggers' films, and I was really looking forward to this one. Unfortunately, the only thing I really felt was disappointment. There is some beautiful cinematography, and it's a well made film. But ultimately I found the performances generally one-note, the story basic, and overall just kind of soul-less.
The characters were unlikable in the main (not necessarily a bad thing), but I felt no chemistry between any of them, nor were they particularly interesting. I get why…

There's not much I could add to the positive reviews that already exist here. It's a beautiful, smart, empathetic movie. One of the things I love most about Sayles is that he cares deeply about his characters and treats them with respect. It's incredibly plotted, incredibly woven, and incredibly humanistic. The acting across the board is impeccable, and - unfortunately - the themes are still so very relevant.
