A clever script and examination of the human ego. Reminiscent of Charlie Kaufman’s Schenectady, NY, but it meets The Substance. And then there’s Sebastian’s dick.
Ok this really hit home as a woman in the first act. I found this highly relatable as we navigate our ways through Ozempic-land and aging celebrities who more and more resemble each other as swollen-faced approximations. Demi Moore gave a very strong performance, and I never want to see Dennis Quaid eating shrimp ever again. The gore effects were really impressive and uncomfortable, but the grotesquerie of act 2 felt like it just culminated in maximalist body horror.
A truly scary movie. Is it a remark on the sensationalism of serial killers and our unhealthy obsessions with watching peel on peel of true crime stories? Are we voyeurs of other people’s anguish? The most horrific aspect was that we cannot find a real motive in any of Kelly-Anne’s behaviors. Her basking in the misery and torment of other’s—at whatever cost—is truly horrifying.
