A heavily re-edited Italian version of this film turned this into a spaghetti western a few years later
Excellent writing, story and characters, plus (for the most part) excellent English dub to boot. An overlooked early Eurowestern that packs a punch!
In his 2008 review at the SWDb, Phil wrote about this epic revolution-centered spaghetti western:
"Corbucci's other mexican revolution western was Companeros made 2 years later and the two films, although very similar in many ways, make an interesting comparison. As the earlier film, The Mercenary has a slightly more serious tone and, without wishing to give the ending away, offers a more upbeat, optimistic conclusion; suggesting a positive future for the revolution and its activists. This reflects the optimimism…
John e Juan.

The prior way of living has now fundamentally changed, and one cannot go back. True love is violent; revolution is violent. A real encounter (whether the stakes are one's love or…
I don't get why this film isn't talked about.
I know that Sergio Leone has created some of the most iconic films of all time and it's kind of hard to make films that live up to that statement, but this is great. It's full of good comedy, great cinematography, brilliant performances, an amazing score and a really fun story.
This is a hidden gem for sure.
