Megalopolis 2024
reminded me so much of BABYLON (which I detested), but it felt more hopeful and less cynical about the potential of people to creative positive change. amidst great pressure and corruption, a person can still do good. In fact, we do good in spite of corruption. the morality felt a bit preachy, but it is a fable. at the end of the day, Coppola is in love with potential, invention, his wife (i guess per the movie’s dedication), but most importantly his art // Cannes 2024

Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of Chazelle’s work and (with the exception of Whiplash) it always feels a little empty to me.
The film truly captures the almost mythological levels chaos and magic attributed to the Silent Era. It balanced visceral and gritty visuals against glamorous and gaudy images. The juxtaposition of those elements feel relevant and true to filmmaking styles at that time.
