So grateful that I got to see this in theaters. It’s a shame that this will have a limited release but honestly I don’t know that it would have worked as well at home. Home viewing can be very distracting. The darkness of a theater was the right call for me and allowed me to be sucked in.

Y’all this is a movie that I liked for a while but after it was over and everything wrapped up, the message ended up being that following Christianity is the answer and that other religions seem helpful but are actually evil. I get it, it’s a complex exploration of having and losing faith and an intermingling of Korean folklore and Christianity, but I’m not a Christian and it simply doesn’t work for me. I had to have the many references explained to me by a Christian friend and overall the whole thing made me uncomfortable. Not for me.
This movie is a stunning time capsule of an era and everything my little baby goth heart wanted in a movie. I didn’t find this movie it found me and I forced everyone I knew to watch it. I still know every line of this movie, despite not having seen it in a decade.
I am not rating it for how well it stood up to time (no comment) I am rating it for the intense fervor that only a teenager wearing too much black eyeliner in 2008 could experience.
I can’t really say why exactly but this is one of my favorite good bad movies and one I doubt I will ever tire of. It’s so delightfully committed to camp and scenery chewing with colorful costumes and creative sets. On top of that is the low budget dubbing (into English for me) giving the whole thing a surreal quality that adds to the already frenetic experience.
