the woman sat next to me in the cinema ran in late as it started and was completely out of breath when she finally sat down. Even with all that adrenaline in her, the movie managed to lull her to sleep within less than 5 minutes and she stayed fast asleep and snoring for most of its 2 hours. I really understood her. It was very beautifully shot, there were occasional moments where it did manage to catch me and I liked the main actor. Could’ve benefited from maybe cutting out 45 minutes of people staring in silence but who am I to judge?

Does this movie have flaws? Definitely. Did the fact that Omar Sy and his clearly French speaking kid randomly spoke English to each other whilst residing in turkey really confuse me? Yes. Do I think this was a really important film to humanise asylum seekers as people affected by war to a German audience at a film festival? Yes. Did I sob the entire 90+ minute run time? Absolutely.
