The Last Showgirl 2024
One of the most beautifully shot movies I’ve seen this year, the director and DP know exactly when to leave you claustrophobically close and when to pull out for the false grandeur of Las Vegas to overwhelm. Double Indemnity 1944
In high school, my improv comedy teacher made my troupe watch 5 noir films in order to better parody genre flicks. I was the only person in the group who completed the assignment. Double Indemnity was the first one I watched and I would watch it again in college for my Scandinavian crime fiction class (for context on crime fiction outside of Scandinavia). The film is deliciously paced with just enough empathy developed for the characters that watching them unravel is exquisite and excruciating. Overall this is a movie much like The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: a classic, for good reason.
