Exceedingly bleak and mean. Michael Caine is ice cold, barely a shred of humanity to him, and yet he is about as good as anyone gets in this black-hearted little world of degenerates and killers. A film with misery in its bones.

Generic but decent enough, some fine nastiness from the villains, who are much better than the Rock Hudson-led heroes. Hudson is pretty dull, which is partially his so-so performance (I like Rock generally, this is just not strong work) and partially the wiener character. Very easy to imagine this as a Randolph Scott vehicle, and with a lead written more for Randolph Scott, and it being a lot better.

Roberta Haynes has one of the worst goddamn haircuts you will ever see in this motherfucker. Lee Marvin is good, as always, in a small sidekick bad guy role.
