    Peter Riegert’s sly charm worked on me this second time around. The Dutch one is still repulsive.

    This grinds to a halt at the same place as Funny Girl, on the ship with the handsome gambling louse. 
    Also the place where Bella discovers cruelty -not in any European city, that’s all sex and pastries, she has to go to Alexandria’s crumbling ruins for that. 

    Emma Stone carries a lot, through the puddles of repetition and bad British accents. While there are periods of delightful effervescence, it only takes us so far.

    Wildly audacious and braggadocious, especially the ending where Chazelle attempts to place this film and its images on par with Singin’ in the Rain and 2001: A Space Odyssey (that literally had me holding my face and gasping aloud in shock and embarrassment “Oh My God”). That being said, it had me at its title credit. Not the best acting and one too many flaccid monologues about the power of movies and the lasting images of flickering lights etc… but…
