Eggers is a pretty good filmmaker but his storytelling is shit.

Astoundingly overt throughout, doesn’t explore its ideas beyond the first few minutes and far outstays its welcome. There are some good parts, like where Moore is getting ready to go on a date, but struggling. However, scenes like this are few and far between in an otherwise bloated and obvious film. It’s a real shame. The premise is great and I was mostly with the film until the final 40 minutes or so, where it just becomes silly, like an old episode of Doctor Who.

It just captivates you and draws you in for the whole runtime. I can’t understand those who claim it’s boring when it’s so visually and thematically arresting. I seldom felt that a shot lingered slightly too long, or that the pace was ever too slow - though I was often thinking about how the fuck Kubrick made this film in the 60s. 2001 is contemplative, immersive and beautiful and it earns the right to take its time.

Incredible animation with a brilliant soundtrack, however I found the story to be disappointing compared to its predecessor. At times it felt over stuffed with too much going on, while the central storyline and characters were less compelling than in the first film. Still an enjoyable film though, hopefully the next one lives up to the original.
