By depicting him as an orphan in search of his biological family, the movie wisely chooses to gloss over the fact that its source material clearly implies that Stuart’s mom gave birth to a mouse, which obviously raises all sorts of not easily answered questions w/r/t interspecies mating and Mrs. Little’s fidelity.

What do you want me to say? That it’s not the greatest movie I’ve ever seen? That simply hearing the first lines of the prologue doesn’t bring tears to my eyes? Grow up.

Among the wonderful things about this movie is the fact that Alex Garland read Jeff VanderMeer’s novel just once before writing the screenplay, meaning the conditions under which the film was made are formally identical to the subject at the twisted heart of its story: annihilation is “not destroying” but “making something new.” Garland’s film metabolizes the book into something more interesting than its author could himself could have managed. Try reading the second in VanderMeer’s series and see for yourself.

Last year I finally saw Blue Velvet (on 35mm at Metrograph, no less), and this year I’m determined to finish the rest of Lynch’s filmography.

The monster behind Winky’s is scary, but I’ll stay haunted by The Cowboy.
