    The Goldman Case

    ★★★

An incendiary public figure is put on trial for a robbery-murder in the ‘70s. The entirety of this story plays out in the courtroom and, as such, the courtroom is made to be more unpredictable and dramatic than it really was. This is done in ways that probably infuriate anybody who’s seen an actual courtroom. The main character, Goldman, is very easy to hate, and yet it feels as though the movie is on his side. Still, it is not hard to stay focused on this film.

This film follows a Native American slave as he is tasked by his land-baron employer to join an ex British infantryman in finding a route to take a herd of sheep up the west coast while avoiding Native American tribes. This is a gritty, no holds barred depiction of the old west. Masculinity is a gigantic theme in this movie, with three different perspectives being portrayed when the two are joined by a classic American cowboy, the “professional” ringer for this kind of work. It ends up feeling like a mix of there will be blood and deliverance.

This is a a worthy entry in the Indiana Jones franchise. Sadly, that’s all this is, an entry in a franchise. The action is amazing and the emotional themes hit the correct marks, but it is such an obvious textbook action movie. The reason I find this disappointing is because of what we’ve seen James Mangold do. He can turn an aging action legend into an epic, human story, and he just didn’t put that on display here.

If you like Wes, you’ll like this. The desert city is absolutely stunning and the cast of familiar faces feels like a veritable who’s who of Hollywood. There is an interesting play-within-a-film framing device that really feels unnecessary, but who cares, it’s fun.
