This movie sucks. The only good things about it are Zendaya and the Trent Reznor score. The camera work reminds me of film school students trying to use all the different techniques to be cool and edgy. And don’t even get me started on the queer baiting. This movie is pretty fucking straight.
The cinematography (and color grading!) is your favorite chef’s kiss favorite chef kiss. I can’t stop thinking about how beautiful this film is: the way it captures the night time/dark shots in such a rich yet desaturated, silvery blue greyscale and the use of rim lighting and back lighting from the windows during interior shots. Stunnnnnning. The costume design is also stunning.
Plot-wise, there is a lot of similarities between this story and the original Dracula novel, but it’s definitely…
I was expecting to like this film a bit more since Sean Baker absolutely wrecked me with both Tangerine and Florida Project, but Anora just didn’t hit the same. That being said, it still captures a moment in time and the characters’ humanity in an authentic way. The performances were great–especially Mikey Madison and Karren Karagulian–and I love Baker’s natural dialogue style, the way people talk over one another or you hear multiple conversations at the same time. Color grading also kicked ass.
