Animal House 1978
So inappropriate, but so damn funny. Watched this at the Shoals Theatre with only 12 people in the house. It’s part of our series with the Shoals Movie Guild. Not sure why more people didn’t show up on a Friday night. When I laughed out loud in the dark, quiet theatre, I became a little conscientious about my comic tastes. Probably laughed the most at the freeze frame when the horse died!
It’s been a while since I’ve watched it…

Dirty 2020
I saw this short film at Sundance. It's another awkward sexual coming-of-age story, which I've always found juvenile. The craftsmanship is strong, but I'm still squeamish, even at my age. The director confirmed in the Q&A that he wants teens to see this and feel more comfortable about their sexuality, an agenda that I find disingenuous.

Her 2013
Not sure when was the last time I gave a film 5 stars. It's been 10 years, which is amazing. I remember like it then, but now I identify so many things I love about this one. Questions and criticism about a familiar, current society; lighting and blocking and wardrobe to match the mood and narrative; contrasting voices of Johansson and Phoenix to evoke questions about the mind/body paradox. Both characters are fragile, but for different reasons.
It's a bold take on the sci-fi genre. Spike Jonze might be one of my favorite directors.
