The frontier, an intense and powerful male lead character, incredible landscape, Oscar winning director and actors, Johnny greenwood soundtrack.. no this isn't there will be blood and it's a cheap comparison to make. This film has almost too many good ingredients to be able to live up to expectations, but greatness is achieved with austere restraint. Doctor Sleep

Think of the principles of tension, atmosphere and discomfort that Kubrick's masterpiece upholds throughout, this film burns all of these with napalm. Stephen king may have been happy with some of the "wrongs" of the Shining being righted here but anyone who cares about the cultural heritage of western cinema should not be. Some okay lead performances are the only things worth any praise here. As with anything Mike Flanagan writes and directs, the entire piece is awash with cheap dramatic story lines and dialogue straight out of a high school drama class.

A film that carefully paints a sincere dramatic narrative upon a backdrop of an anderson-esque surreal comedic landscape. The dramatic moments land perfectly, the most effective scenes being the crescendos of emotion. The comedy on the whole works, with some forays into tropes letting the film down as a whole.

a heady blend of the occult and psychological malaise is present throughout this detective story like a blanketing fog. The viewer is left not knowing where reality ends and illusion begins. Coming from one of the original J horror masters, a perfectly orchestrated version of the classic psychological horror formula.
