A heartfelt tribute that feels comprehensive if a bit stylistically straightforward considering its iconoclastic subject. My reservations about form, where this comes across like a pretty typical behind-the-scenes star biography, are greatly outweighed by the tender admiration of Divine and the delicate, artfully done balancing act of exalting Divine as well as Glenn Milstead's other aspirations as a performer.

Mikey and Nicky 1976
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A wonder of a gangster movie that strips essential genre tropes down to their core: male kinship, codependence, violence, desperation. I don't know why this Elaine May movie isn't heralded as a masterpiece in this mode particularly because it manages to present compelling but repugnant male characters in a way Scorsese gets credit for but with greater ease than most of Marty's pictures . The ending seems inevitable but it's still heartbreaking.

Long Day's Journey into Night 2018
It's a stunning mess that feels like someone threw a mismatch of movie influences into a grim high romance limbo. There's the film noir and crime flashback framework that makes me think of movies like Double Indemnity. Also, the quiet, pained longing of In the Mood for Love or Vive L'Amour (or Blade Runner? I don't know!). But the movie shouldn't be limited by reference points because it has its own lush, alienating sensibility that's cutting.
