An unbelievably strong first half that got me thinking it could be movie of the year contender, but it kinda derailed itself in the second half by an out of the blue decision to shoehorn tragedy into it. I didn't agree with doing that, and the rest of the movie didn't hit for me. Still one of the best animated movies I've seen in years.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2004
Spoilers - maybe it's because I'm watching Eternal Sunshine in 2023 and not 2004, but I didn't really like it all that much? It's very much within the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trend that was all the rage in the 2000's (was this the movie that invented that?).
I loved the trippy dream sequences, and it's edited beautifully, but in the end the plot and the characters just fell flat. We don't even get a lot of time seeing Joel…

Avatar 2009
It's Dances With Wolves, but with Super Indians from Space. The protagonist is a piece of cardboard, the girl alien falls in love with him for no reason, the film doesn't pass the bechdel test. Just another a re-telling of the "Noble Savage" trope. It fetishizes what white people think Native culture is, and it's one of the most racist things I've ever seen. A film tailor-made for boomers. The only reason it's not one star is because it's pretty technologically impressive.
