    Paddington in Peru

    ★★½

On a whim, my girlfriend and I choose to watch Paddington in Peru without having the slightest context as to the hijinx that proceeded this outing. As with most family films, you needn’t have familiarity with what has come before to enjoy what is presented — however clichéd or well-worn it may be. Was it love? Ambition? Fame? Fortune?

Napoleon is neither a historical epic nor a biographical telling, but rather an examination of internal conflict juxtaposed by military conquest. Profound in concept, and dubious in execution. Napoleon’s life plays out before the audience whilst underpinned by letters shared between the Emperor and Josephine. These letters serve as the driving tension of the film, which attempt to glean context to the motivation of Napoleon’s successes and failures throughout his life.

    The Nice Guys

    ★★★★★

The Nice Guys is criminally underrated and is simply brilliant. Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe present incredible performances that are sharp, funny, and dynamic. Unexpected when it released in 2016, and remains a staple of quality cinema and action comedy. By far, The Nice Guys is one of, if not the best, Shane Black’s writing and it shows.
