The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 2004
One star for the bossa nova Bowie covers, another one for the cutaway boat set, yet another one for homaging 70s marine biology docs and books (top 5 niches oat easy) and one more for Jeff Goldblum. Half a star for the Shock Waves reference and another half a star for the helicopter scene. 1 full star reduction for 'maybe it's my hormones' (and some pacing issues).

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo 2012
The 'evangelion :3' title card is one for the ages. Sadly, the rest of the movie just feels devoid of any real voice. Its cold and bitter tone is interesting, but it loses itself in overly indulgent action scenes and attempts at spectacle that just feel drab by the end, not at all helped by Shinji's actions coming off as feeling overly impulsive (even for him).
