Less fun (actually surprisingly dark for a “kids movie”), but substantially stronger narratively than its predecessor.

    ★★

Less a “Brave New World” and more an “All-Time Low”

Uninspired, campy, CW level writing, mediocre fight choreography, and some of the weirdest casting choices of all time (you expect me to believe that Shira Haas is some badass hand-to-hand combat expert???). I feel bamboozled getting suckered into thinking this was going to be a gritty, grounded  action flick by the trailer, and what we got was a goofy-ass inbred looking-ass Megamind. Huge swing and miss.

The scene by “Celestial Island” was cool.

If Thunderbolts or Fantastic 4 flop, it’s time to pull the plug on the Marvel cinematic universe #DoNotResuscitate

On rewatch, probably more of a 3.5/5 but nostalgia reigns supreme and is deserving of the extra bump. Great follow-up to Toy Story with fun characters and a great villain in Hopper (arguably the most intimidating of all Pixar villains), but you can tell that Pixar was still finding their stride. Some the editing choices felt dated, the final sequence in the rain looks a little rough at times, and it’s doesn’t pack the same emotional heft or nuance of their later work, but I still thoroughly enjoyed my time.
