    Cut from the same cloth as the likes of Cure and Memories of Murder.

    Because those two films already exist, this does feel a bit derivative, but luckily there’s enough here to keep things interesting. The cinematography is excellent, and the look of the film really fits the time period in which it is set. At times I had to remind myself this is a modern movie and not something made in the mid- to late nineties (complimentary).

    Overall, it’s a gloomy, haunting experience, and worth the watch for sure.

    This reminds me sort of tangentially of The Elephant Man, which makes me even more sad about the recent passing of David Lynch. 

    There are some Lynchian elements here, I would say, though they’re somewhat on the subtle side besides the obvious John Merrick parallels. I’ve also seen Charlie Kaufman referenced in some other reviews. Definitely valid comparisons.
