A lively and light-hearted alternate history filled to the brim with colourful animation. I was lucky enough to catch this in the early-release IMAX screening, and was blown away by the sweeping, fish eyed vistas of the colonies shot from ground level. Alien: Romulus 2024
Alien Romulus has 2 feet firmly stuck in the past, often to a fault. The film is unsure whether it wants to homage the quiet horror of Alien or the white-knuckle thrills of Aliens, and lands awkwardly somewhere in the middle. The bombastic score is partly to blame. The original film, which Romulus is so interested in emulating, built dread through subtle, ominous tones and moments of silence. Godzilla × Kong: The New Empire 2024
This is the Godzilla movie I would have wanted when I was 10 - just a campy, hilarious brawl between monsters that isn't afraid to go wild with the premise. I was grinning through the whole thing! A really great cast this time around, featuring charming humans and expressive monsters (Kong was particularily great in this entry, and evolved Godzilla literally radiates cool). Despite dragging a bit in the middle, this movie remains an entertaining counter-point to last years Godzilla Minus One, and proves that the goofy side of Godzilla can be enjoyed right alongside the more serious entries.
