Funny, even hilarious at times. This adventure of a group of not-so-dangerous pirates teaming up with Charles Darwin to win the Grand Prize at a science fair may not reach the heights of WALLACE AND GROMIT or CHICKEN RUN, mostly because of some tired cultural references, but it remains a thoroughly enjoyable, laugh-out-loud romp at all times.
A loner suddenly finds himself having to take care of a Chinese refugee who doesn't speak a word of Spanish. Subtle and tender dramedy about loneliness and estrangement. Marvelously acted, especially on Ricardo Darín's part, well crafted, and solidly composed, UN CUENTO CHINO works both as an melancholic "upper" - think Jean Becker (DIALOGUE AVEC MON JARDINIER, LA TÊTE EN FRICHE) - and a sombre character study - in the vein of Stéphane Brizé (JE NES SUIS PAS LÀ POUR ÊTRE AIMÉ).
A well-acted and well-photographed drama about a teenage girl struggling with oppressive Catholic tradition in southern Italy. Brings nothing new to the table, discussion-wise. Rohrwacher's scrutiny of the Catholic church seems squeamish, even cowardly at times. The film also lacks clear focus and direction; the characterisations and the coming-of-age aspects are muddled.
