Growing up, I had a strange infatuation with maritime disasters. Titanic, Lusitania, Andrea Doria—I was obsessed with them all. So imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon The Poseidon Adventure one day after school.

Revisiting it more than 20 years later, I’m happy to say it largely holds up. Sure, the exposition is cheesy, but the second that tidal wave hits, the thrills start flowing.

A devastating story of corrupted youth, incel culture, family upbringings and the ripples that form in the wake of a tragedy. The single-shot format never feels like a gimmick. In fact, there are long stretches where you forget it’s being filmed in a continuous take. *That’s* how captivating the story and performances are.

This is not your typical crime drama. It’s a warning to check on your kids and make sure they’re not being hypnotized by jerk offs like Andrew Tate.

Drugs! Paranoia! The final death blow to the freewheeling 60s by the authoritarianism of the Nixonian 70s! Pizza!

I didn’t appreciate Inherent Vice when it first came out, but I found my rewatch to be much more enjoyable. The key is to give yourself over to it. The plot is convoluted, no doubt about it, but the vibe is undeniable. It’s a perfect blend of The Big Lebowski, Bugs Bunny and All the Presidents Men. Weird combination, but PTA makes it work.

I will henceforth be narrating my life to the tune of “Popular” and unfortunately there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
