The Color Purple 1985
Excellent casting overall, with Whoopi Goldberg absolutely shining as Celie. Her physical performance and nuanced portrayal of body language really underscore the character's inner transformation throughout the film. Spielberg's direction is generally strong, but I do think he struggles at times with tonally balancing the film's heavy subject matter -- especially in the opening act, where moments of gravity feel undercut, particularly by his soundtrack choices. Still, The Color Purple is a powerful, emotional film, and I recommend it as a heavy but rewarding experience.
