Golden Eighties 1986
This was my first Ackerman film, and as I understand this is her only film that’s under 2 hours and is this joyful. Really funny, slightly strange and a really interesting exploration of capitalism in the 80s.

I would say a necessary viewing to accompany this is the clip of Dustin Hoffman talking about how he asked the make up artists on set, once they’d done him up as a woman, to make him more beautiful, which they said was impossible. He then goes and starts crying because he believed he was an interesting looking woman, and that made him think about all the interesting women in the world that he blew off because they weren’t his ideal of beauty. It’s kinda wild to see how much it shook him.

Serpico 1973
Even though I’d seen this before, I realised that I had no idea this was about uncovering police corruption and in my memory Serpico was undercover in drug gangs and that’s why he wore so many crazy outfits. Turns out that was just his vibe. Anyway, this film is just brilliant. Amazing performances.
