    “Keep your lovin' brother happy.”

One of the greatest Westerns of all time. An American odyssey… directed by an Italian filmmaker. An impressive feat of filmmaking, even by Leone’s high standards.

The artistry on show in every possible facet is incredible. The cinematography, the direction, the performances, the score; all perfect. ‘Harmonica’ has got to be one of the coolest Western protagonists of all time, and Henry Fonda taking on an antagonist role is an interesting shift that works really well.

    “We’re in Twin Peaks here…”

On rewatch, I don’t hate the idea of Springwood devolving into some sort of twilight zone full of mental cases with no children because of Freddy’s various nightmare killing sprees. Nothing was ever really sacred with this franchise to begin with, so it makes sense that not even the town itself is safe anymore. The problems come down to the execution, really. The script is terrible, the acting is abysmal and the kills just aren’t…

“Saturday, November 19, 1953. Today, I have decided to kill myself.”

I’m struggling to find a problem with this. It’s truly tremendous.

Absolutely gorgeous on every level, a complete feast for the senses. It grabs you by the hand and drags you through a frantic, vivid, expressionistic, gothic glam rock opera extravaganza and never lets you go. The performances are so effective, the visuals are gorgeous, the songs are brilliant. Its commentary is surprisingly weighty. I can’t sing its praises enough.

De Palma outdid himself with this technical masterpiece. Loved it from start to finish.

    “He's a wife-beater, Dan! Use the gun!”

Definitely an interesting one. It really shouldn’t work,  the plot and pacing are absolutely all over the place, but I still found myself enjoying the sheer insanity of it all. The whole third act with The Bride’s reanimation and the various homunculi literally coming out of the walls was so metal. There’s a fair few rough patches but it’s still a good time.
