Labyrinth 2012
Funded by Germany and South Africa, with some help from France and Britain (including Ridley and Tony Scott), this has all the hallmarks of an overblown, over-the-top, over-sexed period drama. It’s the silliest thing I’ve seen since The Tudors, and I watched it with the same level of bewilderment and guilty pleasure as I did that series.

Trance 2013
Danny Boyle is a terrific filmmaker, and I know he has been elevated to God-like status after his efforts for the Olympics, but his new film Trance is not very good. Some of it is fairly entertaining, and it looks terrific (thanks to Anthony Dodd Mantle’s cinematography), but it’s full of problems.

Stoker 2013
Stoker is a film lover’s chocolate. It’s covered in gloss, blood, Hitchcockian-homage, terrific acting, wonderful music and an atmosphere to die for. It’s probably the most delicious film cinema will see this year.

The Paperboy 2012
The Edge's Cinema review:
The Paperboy doesn’t really hold up. Working with a script from Peter Dexter, the film tries to be too many things: a love story, a comic melodrama, a thriller, and a horror movie. Such genre-twisting can work very well (I recently praised Steven Soderbergh’s latest film Side Effects for managing it well). Here, in the heat of the Florida sun, it feels over-cooked and rather indulgent.
