  Though Mann would further refine and grow in style and ambition, he hits the ground running. In terms of use of lighting, shot use, and camera movement, it’s insanely good and keeps the tension of the plot gripping.

  Also the Willie Nelson cameo is a treat.

  From the opening card of the “Old Klingon Proverb” to its final cliffhanger, the first part of Quentin Tarantino’s samurai/martial arts saga is a relentless celebration of what makes onscreen brutality a hoot to watch. Violence reigns supreme and is presented with overblown style, with Uma Thurman commanding the film as the revenge-seeking deliverer of death.

  There’s of course the extra gruesome anime sequence, which is praiseworthy on its own, but go sequence by sequence, and the charm never stops.…
