Always worried that I’ll expose my own nostalgia bias when watching childhood films like this, but there was no cause for concern with Shrek. I’ve watched this a few times at various points in my life, and this rewatch was still a hoot and had me noticing things I’d previously missed. The emotional aspect of it hits every time, how most of us want to be shown love for who we are, and what happens when you allow your fears…
I’d already seen this before, but hadn’t rewatched it in a few years. It stands the test of time, which isn’t always the case for a lot of the 2000’s comedies. Really enjoyable film that felt more about the bromance than romance, and there was better chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson than they had with any of the female characters. I spent the whole film thinking “that actor playing Claire kinda looks like Rachel McAdams, I wonder who it is” and then found that it actually was her lol. I had also forgotten how fun Bradley Cooper could be before he went chasing Oscars.

All-round phenomenal stuff. Spent so much of the film looking at Kenneth Marshall trying to figure out if it was actually Mark Ruffalo because his face and performance were so off putting and grotesque (in a good way) that I couldn’t tell for definite it was him. Marshall and his wife were also the ultimate “match each other’s freak” kind of couple and you gotta respect that. Pattinson with an insanely good performance, really felt like his characters were played by different people.

Chekhov’s Monkey in full effect. Definitely funnier than the Stephen King story it’s based on, but also definitely not as scary. One of the most hilarious things that only occurred to me after the film was that before getting dragged into the events, Hal’s original plan was to take his son Petey to some kind of rollercoaster theme park. The film struggled to make the major deaths matter or feel as heavy as they should (apart from Bill at his mother’s coffin). I didn’t know beforehand that Adam Scott was in this so that was a pleasant surprise.
