My rating is likely higher because I saw this again in a live score performance with the SF Symphony orchestra and chorus (which I also perform with, at other times). The score is robust and energizing though having it at the forefront also emphasized the repetitive nature of the story-telling, some of which feels symbolic (power sustaining itself and reifying itself through the exaltation of killing whether that is the Roman army in Germania or the gladiators in the arena)…

The Hobbit 1977
This was definitely one of the movies my parents had a homemade pirated VHS tape of and I watched a lot as a kid. Down to Goblin Town is still a banger, the story rips, and the animation feels like a storybook. Holds up.

The Night of the Hunter 1955
The lighting and shadow in this film was incredible and Robert Mitchum’s performance as a deeply amoral man cloaking himself in religious righteousness to wheedle his way into the lives of others was unforgettable. I also loved the abrupt tonal swings into slapstick that prove him fallible: a konk on the head, fingers in a door, a cat underfoot. However, I am really needled by over-the-top saccharine child acting and John and Pearl were basically intolerable for me to watch yet were onscreen almost the entire time.
