Mixed feelings about this one. Brendan Fraser is outstanding with his portrayal of a 600-pound man and the depression and self-loathing and compulsions against which he struggles. As well, Sadie Sink is strong as his angry, estranged daughter. But I am tempted only to describe this film as not much more than an acting showcase. Nora Desmond is ready for her closeup! I recently watched this biting satire of Hollywood for the first in about 25 years. The film is as relevant today as it was in the 1990s and of course was upon its release in 1950. That said, I enjoyed this film but strangely felt kept at a distance by it. Not sure why.
