A comedy under 90 minutes! That’s a revelation.
Very First Movie for better and worse. A lot of energy and ideas and sincerity that doesn’t quite cohere into a singular point. There are so many movies about the Holocaust but they tend to be all tragedy or strange comedy. There is a lot to be said for watching two people process this part of their family history, and the pain and joy that comes with it.

In popular culture, there's this idea women are more romantic than men. As the emotional (or at least socialized to consider our emotions) gender, supposedly, we are more emotional in matters of the heart. But this isn't true. Perhaps because of that socialization, because we know our own emotional needs and the expectations men will place on us to fill our needs, we're more realistic in love. It's rare to see sex on screen these days. And it's still rare to see sex directed without male gaze, especially in this genre, but Love Lies Bleeding brings all the erotic violence by and for women. Women can fuck shit up too. That's feminism, baby.
