It could've been a great comment on the hubris of capitalism, the military, organized religion, and nationalism. Unfortunately, the ending dropped all of these themes in favor of a classic hollywood-style ending that lacked the nuance of the first 4/5 of the film. It leaves the viewer feeling confused, jaded, and hurt at the callous treatment of the main characters and themes.
