Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2019
This film is very well made to me in two major senses. First, the romance between Heloise and Marianne feels very authentic and sweet. I don’t watch many romance films but I think that those are two very important attributes for the romance at hand in any romance film to have. As films about obsession go, this is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The characters were written very well, especially Thomas - he was always taking intentional digs at Nina that added to his antagonistic nature. The film bears obvious similarities to Whiplash with both having an obsessed protagonist and an abusive teacher/mentor.
